301 Days ’til 40: Attitude of Gratitude (And My 100th Post!)

26 Apr

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. ~ Albert Schweitzer

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~ John F. Kennedy

People can be a challenge to deal with, a challenge to live with – both at work and home.  I find that within all the humanness comes discontent, anger, negativity, lack of motivation, small quarrels, etc.  Recently I have become keenly aware of one small quality that can drastically change the work and home environments.  Gratitude.

When I take the time to thank my employees, particularly when they are not expecting it, it catches them off guard, in a positive way.  So often we expect the negativity, the reprimands, etc.  When the thank you’s come, it will even take us back…… it makes us pause, think…… stop and catch our breath……. and then, it makes us smile.  We understand that someone understood our good intentions, someone “caught” us doing something right, someone noticed – someone cared.

A few years ago I promised myself that during the first month of school I would purposely sit down and write one thank you to a college each evening.  They had no clue I set out to do this.  It was such a wonderful experience, for me as well as for them.  As I sat down to write these notes to my colleagues, it allowed me to reflect on what it was about each individual I was thankful for and that strengthened the relationships I had with these individuals immensely.  I could reflect on the things I appreciated (and remember them in the times of frustration) and they were able to know that I really did take the time to acknowledge them.

Today, 301 days ’til 40, I want to take a moment to thank you, my readers.  With this, my 100th post, I am now 25% of the way through my 400 day journey to 40.  I have already learned so much and challenged myself – through my blogging and in other areas of my life.  You too have challenged me, with your insights and ideas – and even your corrections when you felt my ideas may have been a bit linear and rigid.  I look forward to the continued journey and the next 300 days.  Thank you for joining me on this wonderful adventure.  Your presence in my life is a gift.

“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” – Thornton Wilder

Absolutely loves this post! Yes living and creating a world of positivity and possibility is living in the present and appreciating the here and now. Gratitude is paying it forward, acknowledging our fellow man and spreading compassion in our circle for what you project you reflect.

Thank you! Yes, when we pay it forward, I think we get more back than we give out. Such a simple thing, yet we often do not do so….

It’s all about going that extra step … for somebody. Love this post. Maybe even leave the box of comfort for somebodies. Congratulations to 100th post. If all of them has been so good .. all the time, before I found you – you have done a fantastic job.

Its a momentous day for both of us. My Avaaz petition against a corrupt pulp mill being built in our valley just got 100 signees so its 100 for both of us :). I think when you pare down everything in your life like we did when we moved out to the country you suddenly learn about gratitude in a big way. After spending a whole day outside in the garden bent over removing years of neglect you are more grateful for a cold drink and to sit down and rest than to win lotto. You soon learn just how thankful you can be when your home made chicken coop actually holds the chickens in and the quolls out (Aussie version of a ferret/cat) and the sheer serene sense of accomplishment and gratitude that comes from actually effecting change where previously there was chaotic unrest is magnificent! Thats a great idea about thanking collegues anonymously. My collegue is also my husband so I dare say my anonymous thanks might get found out pretty early on in the game but its a great idea anyway. Maybe I will just thank him in person today for supporting my crazy ideas and trying to help me bring them to life. Congratulations on being 1/4 of the way to 40 and still being somewhat lucid

I love doing random acts of kindness! The recipients of a simple complement, especially a stranger I see in a store or something, are so blown away–positively–it’s a joy to me, too.

Congrats on your 100th post! I am looking forward to what you have to say each day. 🙂 Always an inspiration.

It can be hard to be grateful but I try every day to find at least one thing I’m grateful for – usually something small that no one would notice. Like the dance I get from my dog when I come home. Or the feel of just out of the dryer blankets. Or chocolate. 🙂 Mmm…chocolate.

Thank you so much! You are so right, it can be hard to be grateful sometimes…. but as you say, there is always some small thing we can find (yes, chocolate is a VERY good one!!!) My personal favorite, though, remains Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby Ice Cream!!! 🙂

You’re welcome and thank you also for attempting such a rigorous challenge that you have undertaken …and also taking the time to acknowledge each time someone comments on your post..It is one thing to write and receive accolades …but someting else to take the time you do in answering….Diane

Thank you so much for your comment and compliment! It does take time to answer every comment, but I want my readers to know that if they take the time to write, I am going to take the time to read and respond to their comments because they are so meaningful to me. 🙂

This is a wonderful post! Congrats on it being number 100! I agree 100% with you, too. I was a supervisor most of my lworking life, and I made an effort to use praise whenever I possibly could. I think it was a big part of the reason I was succesful in my endeavors.

I’ve only been following you for about a month, but I already feel like I’m following you on an exciting journey! Congrats on your 100th post! I also wanted to share another Ziglar tip. I’m an ENFJ personality type doing finance work…trust me, those 2 don’t mix. I experience extreme dissatisfaction with my career. One of the things that keeps me sane is a list of things I like about my job, which I created after listening to one of Ziglar’s recordings. On especially bad days I can remember with gratitude that I earn market wages, get good benefits, get to work out every day, etc. Those bits of gratitude keep me going when nothing else will.

Great inspirational and enjoyable to read article – and it’s all so true. So glad I’ve found your site lately. Looking forward to your next quarter of insights and inspiration. You have to celebrate today even if it’s a cupcake and cappuccino. (choc cake of course!)

Thank you. I am also glad you have found my site! I did have a cappuccino today to celebrate!!! (That and a bacon cheeseburger, which in my book can often be better than chocolate!!!) 🙂

        April 27, 2012 at 09:22

So long as you celebrated it that’s the important thing! I have food intolerances so bacon cheeseburger is no longer on the eating list – unless it’s a veggie burger topped with artificial or a homemade cheese variation. Which I hear you say is not the same thing at all….

What an achievement – 100 posts in 100 days – you should give yourself a pat on the back. Look how far you have come!!
My boss rarely thanks me, when he does I blush with pleasure and put extra effort into my job until his thanks wear off or until he un-constructively criticises something I have done.
When I feel my students have done something really well I give them praise and the reaction is great, they work even harder to achieve that great feeling again. I hope I give only constructive criticism.

Thank you so much! Yes, I can hardly believe I have made it this far… but look forward to keeping going. I also have a boss that rarely thanks me (or acknowledges me at all, frankly)….. you are so right about your students, and I think this really transfers to anyone… when they get praise they often do want to do whatever is necessary to obtain more…. I know I felt that way when I had teachers or professors I admired.

I love writing thank you notes. It is one of my favorite things to do. I remember when it first started I would have to sit back and think of what I would say to each individual. Now, I see those things up front and look forward to writing thank you notes later. It’s a cool experience. Thanks for reminding me of how much I enjoyed taking part in it. Back to sending “Thank You” notes.

Very well written. It is appreciation that drives people and I have noticed that too. It is easy to reprimand and bring down a person, but the difficult part is appreciating. We never bother to understand the circumstances of others, but when we do put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, Gratitude comes naturally.

Having an attitude of gratitude not only lifts the spirits of those around us, it deepens our happiness also. I know that I’m more cheerful when I focus on what I do have, rather than what I don’t have.
