Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and my partner and I had a wonderful dinner in a nice restaurant, something we do not normally do because we are very budget conscious. It was such a lovely experience and I am so glad we went out. We had a delicious meal and the atmosphere was pleasant and there were no kids – we were in heaven.
Yet, as I looked around the restaurant, something saddened me. I realized that many people, even on a special occasion like Valentine’s Day, struggle with whether to go for a diet dinner or a delicious delicacy. Where is the balance in the equation?

Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie. ~Jim Davis
After all the trouble you go to, you get about as much actual “food” out of eating an artichoke as you would from licking 30 or 40 postage stamps. ~Miss Piggy Read the rest of this entry »

I was at a picnic yesterday and saw this gorgeous creation. Every year we have a parent who shares her talent with our community – it is so beautiful!

We have all had those evenings, haven’t we? We come home from a long day at work and the last thing we want to be doing is preparing a meal for our family. This is even more challenging in homes where both parents must work. Sometimes we find that in these moments we are more likely to either make reservations or order food for delivery. This is dependent on the degree of exhaustion – do we have the energy to eat in a somewhat dignified manner without drooling on the table? If so, we go out – otherwise, we order in and drool on the couch while watching t.v. and eating out of paper bags and styrofoam boxed fast food.
I prefer home cooked meals, but there are times when those breaks are so critical to our mental health.
Today, 176 days ’til 40, I am thankful for the permission we give ourselves to make reservations every once in a while instead of making dinner.
