22 Days ’til 40: Slowing Down

IMG_1287

I think one of the occupational hazards of educational administration that I did not reference in my recent post is slowing down (or, rather, lack thereof).  I love my job.  The students, teachers, and parents in our community really are special.  They come together and support each other, sometimes in the midst of very trying life circumstances.  Another thing I appreciate about our community is its diversity.  I work in a place that celebrates and honors differences – in colors, abilities, religion, etc.  As a result, we are a community that is rich – we learn from each other. We kids feared many things in those days – werewolves, dentists, North Koreans, Sunday School – but they all paled in comparison with Brussels sprouts.                ~ Dave Barry Read the rest of this entry »

36 Days ’til 40: Helping or Crippling Our Children???

IMG_6490

Helicopter parents….. I do not need to say anything else and I can assure you that there is a group of educators around the world moaning – just at the term.  We all know them, sometimes we are them, and we struggle with them all the time.  What is a helicopter parent?  A helicopter parent is a parent who is always on standby, ready to swoop in and catch their child before they fall.  At first glance, a helicopter parent is a fiercely devoted, highly loving adult – and this is true, but, sadly, their love can cripple their child, instead of empower their child. 43 Days ’til 40: Making Chores Fun

IMG_6068

I LOVE it when my daughters teach me important lessons or remind me of lessons I have previously learned, but somehow “forgotten” as I go about my daily routine.  The photos I have included in this blog are visual representations of the lesson my older daughter reminded me of this week: Chores should be fun!   Read the rest of this entry »

108 Days ’til 40: Childhood Dreams, Adult Fulfillment

We plan our lives according to a dream that came to us in our childhood, and we find that life alters our plans.  And yet, at the end, from a rare height, we also see that our dream was our fate.  It’s just that providence had other ideas as to how we would get there.  Destiny plans a different route, or turns the dream around, as if it were a riddle, and fulfills the dream in ways we couldn’t have expected. ~ Ben Okri

I had this rare privilege of being able to pursue in my adult life, what had been my childhood dream. ~ Andrew Wiles Read the rest of this entry »

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky. ~ Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds Read the rest of this entry »

197 Days ’til 40: Wishing for a Snow Day

I better be perfectly honest.  The students are not yet back at school.  The administrators have been on campus for one week, the new teachers for one day short of one week, and the returning teachers for one day. The students arrive on Monday…….  the school is almost set up – ALMOST – and there is a host of paperwork that must be completed and sent out sometime in the next three days.  The school year is about to begin. 215 Days ’til 40: Turn OFF Your T.V.!!!

I think it’s brought the world a lot closer together, and will continue to do that. There are downsides to everything; there are unintended consequences to everything. The most corrosive piece of technology that I’ve ever seen is called television – but then, again, television, at its best, is magnificent. ~ Steve Jobs

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. ~ Groucho Marx

Life doesn’t imitate art, it imitates bad television. ~ Woody Allen

When I got my first television set, I stopped caring so much about having close relationships. ~ Andy Warhol

Television has done much for psychiatry by spreading information about it, as well as contributing to the need for it. ~ Alfred Hitchcock Read the rest of this entry »
