214 Days ’til 40: Is Your SOUL Dehydrated?

22 Jul

True religion is real living; living with all one’s soul, with all one’s goodness and righteousness. ~ Albert Einstein

Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you. ~ Oscar Wilde

Since I was physically dehydrated last week, this week I was thinking about soul or spiritual dehydration.  Do you ever feel completely depleted?  I think we have all had the feeling from time to time…. Some label it depression, others label it burn out, but we have all faced it for certain.  (If you haven’t you are lucky and I hope you never will, though it seems inevitable that all human beings find themselves in this phase from time to time.)

Sometimes it can be really hard to get out of these places of spiritual dehydration……  and, ironically, it does not always (or even usually) seem to be connected to spiritual community.  I have known people who are regular church or synagogue attenders in the midst of active communities – praying with home groups and involved in all sorts of projects, who often feel the greatest dehydration.

I, personally, think part of the key to finding a way to feed and nurture your soul is finding that connection, that spark, that causes your soul to leap.  It is a pleasure when we have that feeling.  Some find it in prayer, some in reading a good book, in a new relationship, or in volunteer work.  Be careful to not put too much pressure on another person to provide you with a feeling of a nourished soul, as that sets you and the other person up for an unhealthy relationship and unhealthy expectations and balance of power……  your soul needs to be nourished through ways that are not dependent solely on another individual.  Some even find nourishment in a new hobby!

There are many things I find that nourish my soul, from prayer and meditation to knitting and quilting, to hanging out with my daughters (and hearing them laugh), to blogging or creating a new idea.  There are times when I feel burnt out and I need to work to adjust my attitude and find a way to get the spark back… there are times when that is easier for me than others…… sometimes I may have to wait for a certain stressful life situation to pass in order to really be back to my “normal” inspired self.

Sometimes individuals have anxiety or depression and a dehydration of their soul that needs more than their own intervention – in these cases, it is important to reach out to a medical professional in order to assess if there is a chemical imbalance that is beyond the control of the individual.  In these cases, they may need medications to help them feel normal again – this is common and it a huge help to those who need it.  It is nothing to be embarrassed about, it is the reality that every body is different and some bodies have chemical imbalances – such is life.

Today, 214 days ’til 40, I will remind myself to participate in activities that nourish my soul…. in the end, it makes my life so much brighter.  I hope you do the same.

Hello again. It’s been my experience, that one of the greatest sources of “soul hydration,” is to foster a spirit of gratefulness – and it’s all free!!!.

Ah, great point. Yes, when you take time to give thanks for all that you have in your life it is hard to be spiritually dehydrated! 🙂

I think you are right about everyone needing to re-hydrate from time to time (nice way to put it too!)
I’ve been there…..needing that spiritual up lifting…..I find that in a good book, or just by reflextion, or by just being quiet and introspective. Depends on why I need it…….

Yes, I can find it in all those ways too and it can be so rewarding (and healthy!)

I couldn’t agree with you more if I had written this post myself! When we are spiritually dehydrated, more “religion” isn’t usually the answer……(sometimes it’s more of the question). You have to learn to be a bit selfish in order to find your way…..meaning….you can’t just continually meet the needs of others and call this “your life”. You have to find what meets your own needs…….and only then can your heart soar enough to outpour love on others from a place of authenticity rather than expectation.

I’ve been dehydrated many times… in fact, I was only thinking this afternoon how spending some one-on-one time with my son makes me feel so much calmer and spiritually happy 🙂

I understand what you are talking about here – sometimes I just get completely drained and it takes days to recuperate. The only real thing that works effectively and the longest is immersing myself in nature. Did that just yesterday! There is something about the energy of being in nature that just fills me up in every way.

Yes, there definitely is! I also can get so depleted that it takes days to recover….. it is hard when I do not have days to recover!

This is great to read; it’s really a clear, simple explication of where I know I want to go. Thanks.

What would I give for a deep and meaningful conversation in my life, that would be the IV to my soul’s dehydration.

Ah, yes, I can relate – I often used to say there is nothing more lonely than being in a group of superficial people who only are capable of talking about the weather – I would rather be alone!

A marvelous and very wise post, 400! After all these years, it still amazes how many do not understand quite how to live a beautiful, bountiful life!

Thank you! Yes, it is so true, people really do not know…. not that I am an expert at it either…. I have a lot to learn! 😉

I like the imagery of dehydration and the quotes at the beginning. Time spent in prayer of gratitude is helpful, I think.

The worst situation is not knowing you’re dehydrated. In partial disagreement with Table in the Sun, there are spiritual communities which are good at helping people through periods of dehydration or darkness, though of course a lot depends on the individuals involved. What is unlikely to help is upping the rate of going through formulas.

I think it is about balance, and as you say, being able to recognize that you are dehydrated so that you can make changes.
