120 Days ’til 40: Great Colleagues

24 Oct

One of the things I have learned over time is that colleagues can make or break a work experience.  I find that, no matter how challenging a job is, if I am a part of a team of dedicated, caring individuals, I have the strength and determination to find a way to tackle the challenge.  If my colleagues are delightful to work with, if we are able to band together and support one another, no matter what is happening, then we are able to get through the stressful times together.

Recently one of our staff members suffered a terrible tragedy in her family.  My colleagues reached out with compassion and empathy that made me so proud to call them my colleagues – they were truly amazing.  In those moments, as we all came together in support, I realized that all the day-to-day gossip and whining that can go on in a staff room do not really matter.  When someone was hurting, everyone was there.

This is a true community – and a gift to be a part of.  What a privilege it is to know and understand that there is a deep level of caring here.  I know that many people are not fortunate enough to experience what we do, yet it is my hope that more work environments can create safe spaces of support.  When people feel safe and supported their productivity soars, as does their happiness.

Today, 120 days ’til 40, I look forward to going to work each day – to see the students and my colleagues.

The greatest accomplishments aren’t realized by “rugged individualists.” They are limited by the constraints and limitations of ego and self. It’s in the joy of team, a collective imbued with diversity, where everyone contributes his/her own unique ability, that true greatness is achieved. Hugs from here my sister. Blessings to you and the family. Keep Walking!!!

So true that feeling safe in the working environment can go a long way toward reducing stress. I have found that one of the best ways to deal with a less safe, or toxic environment, is to pick out the few bright lights and put my thoughts on their positive influence in my life. It always help the stressful junk recede in importance.

Very true, though I must confess that my personal experience of working with ‘caring individuals’ in the workplace has been very limited and that fact has led to a few times where my place in the office or schoolroom has been less than stress-free. The colleagues who DO support us then should definitely make us grateful 🙂

Yes, when we have had less than supportive work environments we really understand the gift it is when we have supportive colleagues.

I can’t say that I “look forward” to work each day, but I love the people I work with. This year we have a caseload of needy students that suck the life out of me. Thankfully, I work with caring, professional teachers who try to make a difference. They value me as a person and not just for what I can bring to the classroom. It’s a nice feeling – being appreciated. So much better than being manipulated by people whose empty compliments are just a way to get you to do what they want.

    Appreciate someone today!

Thank you for this blog. It really makes my days better.

Thank you for the compliment! Yes, it is a challenge to be an educator – but when we see those lights of understanding start to shine in our students it is all worth while!
