17 Days ’til 40: Want a Job? Connect!!!

Screen Shot 2012-05-23 at 9.37.40 PM

It is a fact. It is almost impossible today to find employment if you are not connected. Social networking and high visibility within social media sites is now necessary in order to make meaningful connections with future employers. This phenomenon will only continue to grow as our technology continues to expand in ways we cannot begin to predict or understand. Gone are the days (almost) of newspaper advertisements. Most companies place their “help wanted” ads on their websites. Other companies use online job boards to post their openings where a larger audience will view them. When I am looking for employees, I do both.

273 Days ’til 40: Facebook: Fanaticism, Fiasco and/or Fun?

Today I was thinking about Facebook….  not because it just started selling stock and not because there is already a lawsuit by shareholders….. no, I was thinking of Facebook just because.  I was wondering whether Facebook is a vehicle for fanaticism, fiasco or fun…… Read the rest of this entry »

276 Days ’til 40: Inventions that Change Our Lives

At 276 days ’til 40, I am old, but I am not REALLY old, and with a projected lifespan into the 80’s, I certainly have a long way to go if my genetics and life circumstances choose to cooperate.  That said, when I look around at the world today compared to the world I was born into so much has changed.  I realize that so many of the things I rely on today did not exist, or existed only in their infant forms, when I was young. 365 Days ’til 40: True Friends

As I take a moment to reflect on my 39th birthday, 366 days ’til 40, I am reminded how blessed I am to have so many wonderful people in my life.  The advent of Facebook has created a forum for us to turn what in years past would have been “seasonal” friends into “lifetime” friends.  I have had the opportunity to reconnect with Read the rest of this entry »

399 Days ’til 40: Words With Friends

A few months back I started playing Words with Friends on Facebook.  Being the scrabble buff that I am, and also being the highly competitive person I am, this seemed to be the perfect new time passing companion.  Now, who the hell saw the train coming straight at them?  Words with Friends is indeed a fun game, it entices you, lures you in, and becomes a vicious evil time sucker.  It has taken my time away from other important things like family (and my partner would argue, housework) and the drive and addiction makes it almost impossible to stop.  “Just one more move before bed… I just have to play all these moves I need to play, then when the move box it is empty I will feel complete and whole for the night and can rest and relax.”  So simple, right?

Wrong!  Because my cousin and my friend in Australia are on and they are trying to clear out their “Your Move” boxes too.  They are frantically cleaning out their boxes and I am frantically countering their cleaning with an emptying of my own.  “Must eliminate all of the moves that are my responsibility and take all my turns before I can head to bed.”  It continues to escalate until, 45 minutes later, my cousin beats the crap out of me and I have no more moves to make…. until a little screen pops up saying, “X has beat you, rematch?”

I have had it with Words with Friends.  I need to have real words with real people.  So my resolution for today, 399 days ’til 40, is to stop playing Words with Friends….. as soon as I finish my current moves.

With a triple word score~
