6 Days ’til 40: Delicious Delicacies

15 Feb

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and my partner and I had a wonderful dinner in a nice restaurant, something we do not normally do because we are very budget conscious.  It was such a lovely experience and I am so glad we went out.  We had a delicious meal and the atmosphere was pleasant and there were no kids – we were in heaven.

Yet, as I looked around the restaurant, something saddened me.  I realized that many people, even on a special occasion like Valentine’s Day, struggle with whether to go for a diet dinner or a delicious delicacy.  Where is the balance in the equation?

Seated at the table next to me was a woman in a much-too-short and MUCH-too-tight dress.  She was thin, too thin, and she seriously looked as though she had vacuum packed herself into this outfit, complete with ridiculously senseless high-heeled shoes….. you all know what I am referring too.

This restaurant had FABULOUS things on their menu.  I was in HEAVEN as I ate beef fillet in a Gorgonzola cream sauce with steamed asparagus – yum!  My partner had a ravioli with sweet potatoes that was also amazing.  At a table not far from me, I saw an overflowing bowl of onion soup that I wanted to take off their table (they really would not mind, would they?).  But what did the vacuum packed woman eat???  Boiled chicken with some marinara sauce.  Seriously, you come to a phenomenal restaurant on a special occasion, and choose to eat boiled chicken?

Now, perhaps she had an allergy to the many wonderful foods on the menu, perhaps she has a stomach issue that creates problems with high fat or high calorie foods (my father had one) – but, what if she was controlled by nothing but vanity or strict self-imposed dietary routines?

I have personally lost @ 20 pounds over the past year.  I did so by watching quality and quantity of what I eat exercising 4-7 times a week (for an hour each time).  I am all for nutritional shifts and exercise routines, but I am also keenly aware of our need to find balance and enjoy ourselves.

It is okay to eat a steak or french fries on a special occasion   I would even argue, it is a healthier choice – because understanding our relationship with food and that food can work for us will bring us to a much healthier daily food balance.

Does this make sense?

Today, 6 days ’til 40, I am happy to have balance in my life in a variety of areas and I am very pleased that I can allow myself the opportunity to eat a steak on a happy occasion with pure enjoyment and without an ounce of guilt.  I hope you can do the same.

I’m with you – if you’re going somewhere fancy and forking out a bit of cash for your meal, you should definitely indulge!

Glad you had a nice time! You definitely have to treat yourself sometimes, otherwise what is the point in living if you can’t enjoy things!?

Congratulation to a wonderful and tasteful evening … and your weight lost. It makes sense to me – but I must eat what I want .. very seldom it fries – only with a hamburger and that happens maybe 4 times per year that I crave for that. When I was normal size I saw myself as fat and was constant on diets … when I realized the truth I cried like a baby for hours for all those lost years, about 20 years …. where I denied myself food that I like.Never again will I deny myself anything. Everything has to be in moderation. The lady next to you could have the wrong picture of herself too.

Thank you. Wow, such a powerful story that you shared. So sad the way we throw away the years on stupid things, instead of focusing on the important – huh?

That’s what happen to young women .. when they look at all skinny models in glossy magazines. We get the wrong picture about how we look. In a way I had totally the wrong picture of myself .. and I even made all my cloths myself and still didn’t realized that I wasn’t overweight.

Wow, that is so very sad – but not surprising, given the pressures of society to be thin…… I hope it changes at some point.

I hope so too .. now 18 years old girls what plastic surgery to get bigger breasts … what is that all about.
So I haven’t bought glossy magazine for many years now.
Show us real women .. wearing real cloths instead.

I agree – we also banned Barbie Dolls in our home as we feel it gives the wrong message to our daughters.

Belated Happy Valentines Day my friend. I’m so very happy that you both had this wonderful opportunity to celebrate LOVE! We gave up beef years ago after we rescued a 3 day old calf that had been abandoned (we co-founded a no-kill Sanctuary 12 years ago). That said, you’re right on “point!” Balance in most everything is the key to celebration. The goal of striving to attain perfection in anything (which is thoroughly unreachable) is a destroyer of joy.

Makes perfect sense and your meal sounds divine – exactly what I’d have chosen. So sad, to have such a special evening and ruin it with boiled chicken. You can make that for yourself at home.

Our attitudes toward food as a culture are terribly messed up. There’s little balance in a fast food culture that expects women to look like super models, air brushed and all.
I’m finding that by changing my attitude toward food rather than worrying about weight loss, I’m feeling better mentally and still losing a bit of weight here an there.
    Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, our attitudes are really screwed up! Great points about changing our own attitudes.

I am in total agreement with you on this! We need food, it’s not optional, so why not enjoy it?? Yes, there does need to be balance, as you say; for me, portion size is the issue, not the food itself, so that’s where I find my balance (along with lots of exercise that I really enjoy). Seems to me that anything we do relative to our physical health should always involve pleasure– or else we have little motivation. Great post, thanks!

Congrats on the weight loss! I really agree with your point of ordering boiled chicken when you’re in a nice restaurant; sadly, it’s something I often see…

I agree. I am careful with my diet but I think it is important to enjoy the pleasures that life has to offer on those special occasions, whenever they arise. This week my partner and I were attending a local meeting and as we left the building the cold was biting. He said, ‘Shall we get some chips?’ (I do not usually eat chips but I agreed). We went to the fish and chip shop which was just about to close and took our package back to the car. As we sat and looked at the darkness of the sea they were the best chips I had ever tasted. (In reality they were not the best chips). A memory had been created……….

So happy to read of your wonderful Valentine dinner, 400! You BOTH deserved the splurge!

I no longer buy beef (well, maybe once a year), but I surely would have delved into your fillet with Gorgonzola! YUM, just YUM!
