77 days ’til 40: Winter Food Cravings

Vegetables are a must on a diet.  I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.  ~Jim Davis

After all the trouble you go to, you get about as much actual “food” out of eating an artichoke as you would from licking 30 or 40 postage stamps.  ~Miss Piggy

Yesterday it was cold.  Yesterday it was WET.  Yesterday it was cloudy and raining and miserable outside.  Yesterday I wanted, I NEEDED macaroni and cheese.  There was something about the weather that created a huge craving for macaroni and cheese – curled up in sweats on the couch with a cup of coffee next to me.

Thankfully, I am able to balance the macaroni and cheese craving with more healthy winter comfort foods.  I LOVE to make soups – both cream based and broth based and I love to make chili and stews.  I try to focus on these things – they distract me from pastas and warm muffins and cupcakes.

I will say, though, that no matter how hard I try, a plate of vegetables will never replace a cup of steaming hot cocoa as I sit snuggled up watching the rain fall.

Today, 77 days ’til 40, I am continually working to find balance when it comes to my winter food cravings.

For me, the winter craving is bread – homemade, hot from the oven. Mac and cheese is good, too. Have you tried Jamie Oliver’s version with cauliflower? It’s really good.

I’ve been craving sweets for the last 8 months, and only now I have begun to cut down a bit, but gosh I need sugar so bad 😀

I have similar issues and have been seriously contemplating dumping all sugar from my diet

Dumping all sugar from your diet can cause a higher risk of diabetes. I would seriously reconsider that option.

We had the same kind of day. I struggle with the same cravings for comfort food…mostly home baked goods. I’m with you on the soups and stews…yummy, filling, and good for you. 🙂

Wonderful image, 400–KUDOS! I, too, enjoy making soups from scratch…today’s was faux French Onion (because I am not French!) with carrots and red lentils…very healthy and perfect for a damp day, as it was here in Chicago! Mac ‘n’ cheese I do without, for some reason…it just doesn’t thrill me! I’d rather have the cheese on a from-scratch pesto pizza, with onions, black olives and Crimini mushrooms (made that last night!) !!!

Thank you! Do you know that most of my images are taken with my iphone??? The rain image I had to take with my partner’s SLR because I needed more shutter speed options, but usually it is just my iphone 🙂
