328 Days ’til 40: Treasured TIME

30 Mar

Lose not yourself in a far off time, seize the moment that is thine.

~ Friedrich Schiller

Time.  It is one of the few things that we cannot get back when it disappears.  In the wise words of Benjamin Franklin: “Lost time is never found again.”  When time is gone, it is gone.  Yet, I personally find that time is one of the things that I manage to waste more often than not.

Harvey MacKay said, “Time is free, but it’s priceless.  You can’t own it, but you can use it.  You can’t keep it, but you can spend it.  Once you’ve lost it you can never go back.  His words are so simple, so poignant, so true…… and yet, how many of us continue to trudge along in our daily routines never even thinking about the daily amount of waste we produce (in the area of wasted time?)

If many of you are like me, the two largest chunks of your day are probably going to work and sleep.  Both of which are critical in their own right, for differing reasons.  In between the work and sleep is when I have to squeeze in feeding and watering my family, making lunches, directing homework completion, chatting with my children, writing my blog, exercising daily, and the occasional knitting project.  Some days there is just too much, some days I just can’t cope… then I have the horrid task of trying to deem which activity is most worthy of being dropped in order for me to be able to have more time, breathing room within the day.

Some people really do not have a lot of time and are squeezing the most into every day.  Yet, others have all the time in the world, even when their perception is that they do not have time.  Those people I like to remind of this quote by H. Jackson Brown Jr. , “Don’t say you don’t have enough time.  You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”  His words are so true, yet so hard for some to accept, particularly when they are living stressful moments in the context of their own lives.

As we know we all waste time, I think the first step in gaining more time is to really analyze where our time is going.  Break the day into 30 minute increments and create a log.  Log what you do during the day, all day, for a minimum of three days (maximum of 7).  I believe that, when you are through with the seven days, you will have a significant piece of information pertaining to yourself. As you look at your time log, see which activities take the most of your time.  Also, look for patterns in your log.  And, of course, look for areas that you might be able to cut out in order to ensure a more time to yourself.

While I personally struggle with having the best time management skills, I also understand the need to analyze my priorities.  As I look deeper I can make conscious decisions about where I want to place my time, my precious time, my treasured time, and my energy.  With a limited amount of time, I want to know that I can use it wisely to help impact the lives of others.

In the words of Nelson Mandela:  We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right.”  I agree with Mandela, the time is always ripe to do right, to offer and contribute to this world we live in.

I will leave you with a final quote from Alan Lakein: “Time = Life, Therefore, waste your time and waste of your life, or master your time and master your life.”

Today, 328 Days ’til 40, I will NOT take time for granted – I seek to keep myself in check and not waste time.  I will live consciously and will make my decisions based on the best use of my limited time.

The strange thing I notice most about time is that when I am busiest and have lots to do – somehow I manage to get more accomplished.

I find the busier I am, the more time I seem to have. The days I have “nothing” to do are the days I seem to run out of time.

Me too, most definitely! I remember in college I had a professor say that when he needed something done he would always give it to a busy student! 😉

I, like you, attempted to make every minute count. Sometimes there were not enough minutes in a day, in which case I had to steal from sleep; either at the end of the day or the beginning.
I no longer work and therefore have the benefit of spending my time (mostly) how I wish to. That does not mean that I abdicated my responsibilities to family and friends (or myself). What it means is that I have quite a bit of flexability.
I hope that everyone is able to reach the point in their lives where they also are flexable with their time. The problem is that some of us will be flexable before we retire.
Thanks for more wise words (and you still ave 329 day remaining!). Amazing.

Thank you, Wally. I must admit that I fantasize about being in a space when I will be able to retire and have more control over my time. Flexibility to do what you want when you want is a dream of many. I am not sure I will see flexibility before I retire…. but I suppose only time will tell 🙂
Thank you for your great comment!

Thanks for the insightful post. Two aspects of my own life have made me very much aware of time’s fleeting nature: 1) I’ve been a teacher in the same high school for a long time, and children of students I taught in my early teaching years are now in my classes, and 2) my own children are growing up so fast.

After I began to realize just how precious time is, Pink Floyd’s song “Time” encapsulated it for me: “And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking, racing around to come up behind you again…”

      March 30, 2012 at 10:04

Thank you, Adam. Wow, what an experience to have the children of children you taught now with you! I am also in education and it scares me to think that the first students I worked with now have children who are elementary school aged – how did that happen? I also agree that our own children seem to grow up so very fast. Thank you for the mention of the Pink Floyd song….. what a perfect song to tie in with this post! 😉

Time with my dog is something I would love to have back right now. She passed away on Sunday while I was out of town. I miss her very much, but the thing that makes it better is knowing that for the seven weeks between finding out she had cancer and her death, I truly took note of time and made sure I had sweet moments with her.

I findit so very interesting that you wrote this comment because I was thinking about this when I wrote the post, but decided to keep the post a bit lighter emotionally. My father died a year and a half ago and, of course, time is one thing you cannot get back with people. I find that people often regret not spending enough time with their loved ones, but you never hear people say, “I spent too much time with them before they died.” – Such an important reminder you bring up, Thank you. I am so sorry for your loss. In our home, pets are family members and their loss would be devastating.

Funnily enough, my cat hit the “Post” button while I was writing that last reply. He’s still around and kicking. I was going to write that I have not yet had to deal with a loss as significant as yours. I think this whole time issue is a difficult balance between putting too much pressure on yourself to value every moment (because, let’s face it, some “time” sucks) and really taking advantage of the time we have. So, in a way I was lucky to find out my dog was going to die soon. I got to make up for all the times I snapped at her for whining at the back door!

For me time management is a game, a puzzle that can always be solved as long as you are willing to really choose the right pieces. Sure I don’t always get the pieces I like (work takes in a decent amount in the puzzle and is a priority) but the pieces that I do not get to use this time, do not get lost and may be used in another version when priorities have shifted.

    • 400daystil40

      March 30, 2012 at 10:00

Yes, this is so very true, Gilraen! I find that I always tend to get the pieces…. but sometimes my follow through is lacking a bit!

Just wonder what “waste time” stand for ???!!! Does it mean that we have something with our life every day ???!!! Does mean that we have to be active all the time ???!!! It’s so that if we are happy with our life – neither we do things or not – that’s most important. Wonder why we can just enjoy time, go easy and maybe waste it on ourselves.

    • 400daystil40

      March 30, 2012 at 10:00

Ahh, what a great question Viveka!!! I find that there are days when I need to rest when I do not feel like that rest is a waste of time – then there are days when I feel like I should be productive and am just wasting my time on facebook or randomly surfing the internet for hours…. maybe it is context, or maybe even the amount – that one day wasted is really a needed break, but weeks or months wasted is an issue……. Great question! 🙂

Time is ours and we do what ever we want to do with it – I can waste days and don’t feel guilty. Why should I have to do things to seam having a fulfilled life – load of scarp! It’s my time *smile

I hear what you’re saying, completely agree with it all! …I’ll get to it in a bit though…

kidding aside, I do know what you mean and have tried very hard to teach myself time-management and such. What I have found though is that (unlike my dad and sis) I always mess it up even worse or fail to adequately utilise or follow any day-plan that is too regimented or time-bound, something about my mental demeanor clashes with excessive organisation and what with having no choice but to work within such conditions at work I think outside of it I chafe at any efforts to do so.
However strangely enough, if I’m relaxed or in the zone for a task or just enjoying it or simply in a good mood during that day/period, I can accomplish far more than I would have thought likely and have even been known to beat expected time and be done early and then just chilling. It’s what used to happen at a magazine I was with for a few months a fair while back and they were so happy with me they wanted to almost double my pay.
It’s strange and amusing to me to see how we react physically and mentally to all the things in and around our lives.

I spent 11 years doing something I didn’t enjoy. Going the extra mile for people who did not appreciate it in a very co-dependent way, then getting upset they did not appreciate it. Epiphany: How stupid was I? So, I pissed off everyone and decided to become selfish and I only do what I feel like doing for people who appreciate my time. I found that everyone can survive fine without me doing everything for them. “It’s not my responsibility” is my new mantra. The question I ask is “Are they competent and capable of doing this for themselves?” There are narcissists everywhere looking for nice people to make them feel special. Enjoy your time in this life, it’s YOUR life!

Yes, you are so very correct! I have also found that there are always people who want you to worship them and do everything for them…. which can be so very draining! I use the same strategy and will not often do things for others that they can do for themselves. I like the way you ask yourself the question if they can do it themselves and then make your decisions from there. Very smart! 😉

Sometimes wasting time is a great thing to do … instead of using your time to be so productive, sitting a round with friends, strolling on the beach or just listing to your favorite music without having to keep any time is the best way to live … it’s not really a waste just a way of being generous with it for yourself

Good strategies. I started finding time when I decided never to say “I don’t have time.” Then my priorities became clear and I carved out time according to my priorities. The only things we don’t have time to do are the things we don’t need to do.

Let me tel you a story. When I turned 40 my parents were still alive. They gave me a cake with 40 black candles around a black tombstone candle. My brother–3 years my junior–gave me a box of individually wrapped old-age remedies: Exlax. Geritol. You name it.

So I saved those gifts and when my brother turned 40, I gave them back to him.

40 is fun. 60 is even better. Just celebrated that with a big crowd and had a ball.

“quote by H. Jackson Brown Jr. , “Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” <—- ouch 😦 Brutal truth.

"With a limited amount of time, I want to know that I can use it wisely to help impact the lives of others." <—- couldn't have said it better. Exactly how I feel.

"As I look deeper I can make conscious decisions about where I want to place my time, my precious time, my treasured time, and my energy" This is a constant personal struggle.

I LOVED this post! I was talking about the incredible value of time not long ago. We were talking about how, with chores/work/etc, I often try to do several things at once and how much I hate wasting a trip anywhere — wasting a trip is wasting time that I could have for something/someone more special. We don’t get that time back!
