Purpose

I began this blog as a challenge to write for the 400 days leading up to my 40th birthday.  I met my goal and my 40th has come and gone…. almost two years ago.  For about 8 months I posted regularly on an iphoneography blog (Me, Myself and iPhone) and then with a cross the world move and some health issues I found myself far from the blogging community.  I missed blogging and interacting with my many cyberspace friends who joined me on my 400 days journey.

I have decided to start writing again here (without the daily commitment) and I hope that you will enjoy my continued random musings.

Thank you for continuing to join me on life’s journey!

PS – If you have a brilliant name for my blog, I am open to hearing it! 🙂

Great concept for a blog. One of those: why didn’t I think of that moments for me… :). I was challenged recently by a speaker at a writers’ conference to do something everyday that I would normally hate to do, or be too afraid to attempt…advice I wish I had heard ten ears ago…

I am not 40 yet but I know the truth and I am not saying that to brag just to share.

There is only one truth – you are born and you will die. Your life’s mission is to live and enjoy all of it without judging, labeling and looking for answers because there are none. Any answer you might get loses its meaning the day you die, and it could be today or it could be in 50 years.

Just live my friend and follow your heart. Whatever you want to do, do it. Whatever you feel – pain, happiness, joy, love, hate – just take it in and embrace it. It is not about compromises, it is not about making somebody else happy. It is all about you and how you choose to live…

Thanks, Dace. I appreciate your comments. Indeed you are correct, we all need to work on living our authentic truth, our lives, without connecting to the judgement of others. Easier said than done for many…. I think one of the keys is for us to remind ourselves to live our authentic lives each day…. to free ourselves from our self-judgements and the judgements of others.

Is the Dead Sea in Israel a pointer to life?
It has a river GIVING to it.
But it doesn’t GIVE OUT to anything.
The result is that it becomes more and more dead.

An interesting observation… I personally believe we all have to be giving and receiving in order to be living life to its fullest.

I like what you wrote, Dace. I like taking it all and living fully.

My thought is similar. My personal purpose is to transform myself and help others. My “core values’ are Learn, Grow and Have Fun!
Not looking for outside purposes, nor beliefs that live by. I want to keep growing and learning and enjoying life as much as I can until I die.

I’m 46, and this purpose has been powerful for me for 20 years. It still feels like I’ve arrived, and still feels meaningful.

I believe everyone has to discover internally what their own purpose and core values are. Then, if they are brave enough and passionate enough, to live to them as fully as they can.

Life is short, enjoy every moment possible.

Ironic, I started writing my blog to fulfill a similar purpose. Well, sort of similar but also sort of the opposite. Lol. Although I will say, I think you’re right about what you’re searching for; it will come from within. Sylvia Plath said, “perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing.” Anyway, I’m glad you stopped by because I can totally draw strength from your experiences and thank you for documenting them for us to read!

”I have a loving, supportive partner, two amazing children and a good job in the profession I set out to be part of during my university days. By any outsider’s account, I have “arrived.” Yet, somehow it seems I missed the passenger arrival terminal and I want more. I have not arrived, I am in the international transfer terminal continuing to reach for more.”

I’m 25 – I’m fascinated to read your insights, the part I’ve quoted resonated – I was just thinking the other day, is this it? I’ve completed University and I’m working in a sector which I always dreamed of working in. The future could lead to promotions etc – but is this truly it?

I look forward to reading the blog 🙂

Wow…so nice of you to think my “Band of Angels ” is awesome.Thank you! I like the way you write! You have some fun stuff! Ah….turning 40….was really a great and whimsical time for me considering…my husband had an affair with my best friend and left me with my 18 month old….alone….if it wasn’t for my family…..my 40th Birthday. …..would have been very sad indeed. You will find your soul’s yearning…for sure! simply because you are LOOKINg…another thing I just learned…maybe it will help you too…is to not get caught in trying to “overcome” any circumstance or challenge….just notice it…embrace it as much as that can be possible…and it will find a different….wonderful ending for you…….!!!!!!! Ha Ha!!!! Good luck! Great Blog!!! THANK YOU!!!!

    Hey Kid,

Thanks for reading the blog. Sounds like you have figured out that doing everything “They ” said to, isn’t necessarily the answer. I do know that Love and Forgiveness are the two biggies. On a personal level, it is learning how to be selfish, without being becoming narcissistic- that is the real journey. Let go, move on, and feel the fear and move past it. Thanks from superatsixty.

I’m about 2 decades older than you, and havn’t figured it out either. Did figure out that it’s not about figurin’ it out though. Experiencing it I suppose, and maybe more figurin’ it in. Kind of like a resonance. Like in music, which is my main thing, but I put up a blog because I kept hearing to get folks to come to your music website you gotta put up YouTube videos, and blog. And you were kind enough to call the poem I put up “awesome”. One thing I figured in that is important, is kindness. A very good resonance. So I thank you for your kindness. And the awesome idea you have here for a blog. Peace and Blessings.

I don’t get much feed back, thank you. If we could see the world as you, a path of learning and challenge we could cease to judge and know God Himself. The Law of Love is the highest path. It is a great lie that, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” God knows perfectly the heart of man and can judge. So may He grant you blessing in your intent to reach for higher things. I guess we’re all looking for the same thing: the ultimate meaning of life. Why are we here? There will be road signs along the way but even now after sixty years there are times when I say ” did I miss the turn somewhere?” This may sound selfish but I learned that I wasn’t put here to make others happy I was put here to be happy. I guess being happy is a choice that we can choose and I believe that when we are happy we’ll make others happy. I wish you all the success in the world on your quest.

The person I imagined I would be at 40, and the person I actually turned out to be could not have been more different. I thought I had too much skin in the game already and plowed forward hoping I could compensate in some other area of my lives. Not an effective strategy (at least for me). Nearing 50, with a completely different life, I can truthfully say that I’m happy. I hope your find what you are looking for as well.

It’s so funny that you are blogging about this! I made this conscious choice at 17 years of age that no matter what I was doing, all I knew was by the time I turned 40 my life will change. I am 43 now and have to say, I have been continually committed to working on me. As you can imagine it hasn’t been easy, but in some aspects even the tiniest of steps have felt better than what I once had.

Great idea for a blog! Life is truly a journey and documenting yours at this milestone will be interesting for you and help others. You will learn a lot about yourself and in the next decade look back at 50 what you were dreaming at 40. Been there and done that. I feel like I am always evolving and there are lots of transitions to come. Best!

Gee, I dont remember anything significant about 40. I go through the international terminal periodically and find it quite refreshing when I reach a new “destination”. It seems to be an ongoing process for me 🙂 I enjoy the journey, revel in the arrival and then start the process over again.

That doesn’t mean my physical, intellectual, and emotional travels are devoid of challenges or disappointments, just that no matter where I am, if I want to be somewhere else, I will take the time to figure out a way to get there 🙂

I’m looking forward to following your journey!

Thank you for reading my blog. I’ve changed the name of it because I ran into one or two probs with the other. What can I tell you, a baby boomer, just out and out illiterate when it comes to technology, I’m still finding the internet awesome and I marvel at how my kids and Grandkids just seem to understand it all without any lessons!!!
Sounds a bit pathetic I know, but that’s my struggle for now. I’m 61 and I guess you could say I have a Ph.D in life experiences and the older I’ve become the easier and more simple life seems to get and I just wish I had your sense of ‘purpose and knowing’ when I was forty. Fulfillment does come from within and it’s a wonderful gift to feel “happy joyous & free”….. I love your blog your an excellent writer and enjoy the daily read. Best regards Tovah

My dear no need to worry about turning 40; the yearning you feel is normal, and very much a constant reminder how alive you are. Yes the journey wil forever have you question well just about everything; yep Socrates was full of them. As humans we are often in turmoil and what I figured out around my fortieth birthday is that we are all a vessel and here to express a multitude of things; hence do something new, go dancing, start a novel and thank whomever for the power to explore your life.

Thanks for visiting my blog and liking my post “Pause”. I like your moxie. I’m inching towards the 50 year mark and have found that if I stay focused on my why the “shoulds” that are proscribed by society matter little to me (should own a home, should be partnered up, should be at a certain level by a certain age). Live in the moment, because that’s all you have right here right now.

    • 400daystil40

      March 17, 2012 at 14:37

ThanksThank you for your comment – I agree with you completely – we need to look at what we believe we need, not the things society tries to tell us we need…. a home, partner, kids, and a dog make some people happy, but can also make some miserable – we have to find OUR paths, not the ones prescribed by society. I hope you have found yours! 🙂

I agree with the other people that blogging, thinking, reflecting each day until your 40th birthday (neat idea, 400 days, 40th birthday… poetic) is a good idea. I want to suggest that once you’ve hit menopause (I’m assuming that you haven’t yet.), that what you learn now will change, oh how it will change, once you’ve gone through that particular storm.

I had to chuckle, too, … oh how I wish I had done the same, before my 40th birthday. I tried to do the same before my 50th (now that was a biggie).

Now, I’m approaching a milestone, age 60. It depressed my sister, becoming 60. For me, it’s LET ME AT THE DISCOUNTS! 🙂

I’m approaching it differently, but with the same idea as you have with reaching 40. What I am trying to do is make my 60th year my BEST YEAR. I want it to be the year that I get it ALL together. In some cultures, traditions, reaching 60 is reaching the age of wisdom.

They are right! NO way I want to go back to a younger and stupider me, heh.

So… I think what you are doing is great. I want to keep tabs on what you’re saying/discovering.

I also want to say thank you, for reminding me of how I want to approach my 60th year!

    THANKS. YOU GO, GIRL! 🙂

      Thank you, Hugr5!!!
Oh no, even more changes in menopause!!! What will I do?!?! – Hopefully learn from that season as much as this one – maybe that will be the new blog once I hit 40???? 😉
I think your wisdom is so correct, we do need to approach each year with the intention of making it our best year. I also agree, I have never looked back and I have never wanted to return to a younger version of me – I feel like I earn each year I complete and that each year gives me new knowledge and strength. I look forward to reading more from you!!!

There is an old hackneyed expression of; be yourself, but what are we as individuals? We are different things to different people all through our life. The lucky ones are those who come to know what they really are and live their life as they want.

I can say this, from my easy chair, (just kidding) that at age 64 the international terminal remains a very interesting place to be. I have also found that if I leave the terminal and wander around outside, I find a world filled with curiosities, mysteries, and occasionally, companions, some of who are quite odd i an engaging sort of way.

By the way, if the domestic terminal is your destination, which I sincerely doubt it is, you might want to take Gandalf’s note off your suitcase.

    Thanks for visiting my blog!

Thank you for stopping by “Eyes to Heart” and liking my blog “Sign of Spring …” … Your quest to get life sorted by 40 is a noble one and I wish you well. … If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that age is just a number. The lessons of life creep up on us randomly and with no great respect for timetables, but if you are ready to receive them, as you seem to be, they will prove valuable no matter what your age. … A tip or two from someone on the same journey (but past 40 😉 ) … take care of your health and limit your contact with negative people who drain your energies. Oh … and have fun doing what you love! … Thanks again for introducing yourself … Be well … Dorothy 🙂

I have found that how “old” I feel is directly related to how happy I am. In my early 30s, I felt old. My personal life at that time was in bad shape and I felt weary. I’ve reached the milestone you are about to reach and I feel young and full of life! I’m married to a wonderful man and enjoy each passing year of my children’s lives. Enjoy! 40 is the new 30! (P.S. Thanks for stopping by my blog. It allowed me to discover yours!). –Verónica

Thank you, Veronica, for your comment! I agree with you! When I was younger I also felt older than I do now (maybe some of that was also the energy it took to take care of my children when they were little). I also find that the happier I am the younger I feel – when we are happy we naturally have more energy! It is wonderful that you have turned your life around and brought it to a place where you found a supportive relationship and happier times. That is what we all should be aiming for!

This is my 60/40 year. I don’t remember looking this far ahead into the future but I truly don’t think it would have been a lot different from how it has turned out! I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up and when it willl be that I am grown up. I love the idea that when my 60th birthday comes in July that I spend the entire year celebrating it. September will bring our 40th wedding anniversary. It’s taken a lot of love, practice, blindness and work–more on the hubby’s part I beleive!–but I wouldn’t change a bit of it either. There haven’t been any huge world shattering accomplishments but there are two productive patriotic children who have been a blessing to us and the communities they live in. One, our son, has helped to produce a grandson, who at 11 is wiser that I was at 30 and a granddaughter 7 who lives every day with joy and adventure that encourages me in my quests. It would be so easy to toss out all sorts of platitudes but what IS life all about? Rise each morning with love in your heart and embrace whatever comes. Life just is.

Great blog, look back to what you enjoyed as a child, uptake some old passions. Yes you are married, “have the 2.5 kids and the Volvo,” but what is it that makes YOU tick. Sometimes we get so caught up in live that we forget to take care of ourselves.

Turning 40 was a beginning for me. My family and my job were going through some changes, as is often the case in life, just when you come to an equilibrium. What I have learned since then is that you keep changing, in ways that you don’t necessarily expect. This was an amazing discovery for me, and one that continues. There is so much out there for us if we aren’t afraid to seek it. I have experienced so much more since then. My hope for you is that you reach out to the power to keep on changing and growing. It sounds like you are on the right track! Thanks for visiting my site.

Wonderful idea of writing out your thoughts as you live through them each day! Loved your response to your daughter’s desire for her own space! Let her know it could be worse – Our oldest, who always had his own room, is now turning 13 & just recently had to ‘move in’ with his two younger brothers when we moved to Hong Kong last Dec.! Talk about cramped, the room is the size of a storage closet! — Thanks for stopping by our blog recently, hope you were inspired & hope you will return! Looking forward to reading more of your life discoveries… Who isn’t wondering ‘what else is there?’ – for me, the answers come through faith… I hope you will also find Truth & Light in your search!

“…I missed the passenger arrival terminal and I want more.” Along the way in my seventy years, I Iearned: You must want what you have before you want what you don’t have.

Many have a misconception about happiness. It is not to have what is outside, but to be content within.

Happiness is a choice. Each day you awake you decide to be happy or not.

    Many blessings – Maxi

Thanks, Maxi for your comment and insight – you are correct, happiness is indeed a choice. In fact, I often will tell my employees or the children I work with that they can choose to hold on to their anger/ frustration/ etc. or choose to move on and have happy days, etc. You brought up an important point!!! 🙂

Thanks for liking my blog post about my “Art Prescription” workshop. As a nurse and artist I too am on a quest! to share the healing benefits of art and creativity. I’ve set a goal to write a haiku a day for 365 days and pair them with my art! Blogging is a wonderful activity. Writing is healing and like art lowers your blood pressure, boost your immune system, and increases the good brain chemicals, like serotonin, the feel good chemical.

Seems you’ve hit a cord with people, writing from your heart. I’d love to grow my blog and encourage a creative life.

What an excellent idea! I remember 40 as hitting a wall. Bang, it was there, I was there without the seasoning and reflection to make the transition a smooth and measured evolution of human experience. I didn’t do it gracefully. I found myself on the other side of the looking glass and coming to terms with an uncertain future. Now I am well past 40 and adjusted to the future and the future is what we make of it. I am more concerned with the larger issues of life, which were ignored in the mindless era of the pursuit of comfort and “success.” Carlos, machimon.wordpress.com

Whatever motivates you to find authenticity has the potential to be a good influence. Approaching 42 (the answer to life, the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams) causes me to ponder why 40 is a significant number. Our attachment to age and the phases of life can also be a good opportunity to examine and reflect. Kudos to you for taking a path toward salubriation. Good luck, be well, have fun in the mean time. 🙂

Oh shucks I should have put a winkey at the end of my 42 comment. No correction intended, just my own ponderance of the next marker of age as we all move along the timeline. 🙂

What a great idea! and to do it before 40. My 40’s were not so good. I suffered from panic attacks agoraphobia and trying to do my best raising four chldren. I had a great 50’s with a few bumps and by 60 have my first book published, have said book in most libraries in London, where my pub is and more importantly feel self worth for the first time. Now I hope it is not too late to reach all my goals. I wish you aloha.

Thank you for your comment, Marilyn! It sounds like you have come a long way since your 40’s, which is also a very good point for many readers – our lives can change drastically at any point…. and can grow better as we age. 🙂 I feel like I am earning every gray hair I have!!! 🙂

My 40s have been the best years of my life, hands down. I know they will be yours, too. Every decade just keeps getting better because we are wiser and understand what really matters in life. What really matters in your life? Pursue it with gusto, you will be happy 🙂

I like your description of where you’ve got to and the divine restlessness. Becoming wise through blogging is an interesting concept, but it could work.

I was a bit depressed with every x0th birthday from 30 until I hit 60. Then I said to myself, “I used to be bothered about getting old. NOW I AM OLD! YIPPEE! I can still climb mountains, write poems, etc etc etc!

Thanks, Simon7banks, for your comment. Yes, perhaps it could work to become wise through blogging… though I think blogging is really just the vehicle to get the brain moving. I love your attitude towards growing old! Life is too short to get depressed by numbers! 🙂

I so appreciate your blog. I’m on the other side of 40. In fact, on the other side of 50. In my grandmother’s day that was old. New generations are finding, however, that there is still so much to explore and to offer on the other side of 40. In fact, I almost called my blog The Other Side of 50, but I didn’t want to be that categorized by an age group. I look forward to sharing your journey to a milestone.

Intriguing how we humans 🙂 are so (pre)occupied 🙂 with numbers, dates, figures, age… for you, however, it is more a vehicle, I feel, than a (pre)occupation 🙂 , a means to reach an end… a starting point.

This reads a beautiful journey: doing what you like and how you like… going and finding what your heart seeks, sharing and caring along the way, while unfurling and unfolding your soul as if it were wings… as you best know!

It is a blessing to be able to voice the ‘self’ as you do, and you have blessings aplenty in your life, rather, you have consciousness of all these blessings and you spread the radiance around to your audience…

Thank you … I’m happy you passed by my space and left a trace… this way I could be a sharer, too… sharing is never enough, nor is caring.

I’ll be happy to pass by and read your musings and meanderings… a refreshing thought and an edifying pastime for an ancient lady… who regards ‘masks’ as part of the many selves hidden or obvious within and without, and who has never cared for numbers, figures, digits, years, age… 🙂

You were kind enough to ‘like’ my today’s blog, ‘Winter Abstract3’. Having read your own recent blog entries I would be interested to know what you liked about this particular abstract. I have a feeling that how we interpret an abstract is a reflection of our state of being at the time. I’m not a ‘shrink’, I’m just interested in how people relate to my abstract images.

      Hi Louis,
Thank you so much for stopping by my site. Good question, I am not sure what it was about your abstract that drew me to it – perhaps the simplicity of the contrast between black and white with the snow……????? I tend to just allow myself to like some things without deep analysis (not sure if that is good or bad). I look forward to seeing more! Feel free to stop by my blog anytime! 🙂

😉 Not likely. I am aware of it anyway, but a countdown? Maybe a 100 days before is enough. And I only post about 2 photos a week. After all, not everything I shoot is publishable and I like giving each photo some special focus.

Hi there 400daystil40, I have just done a Vipassana meditation course (10 days of silence, 8 hrs per day meditation, walking and enjoying nature and sleep) through the http://www.dhamma.org, there is a centre in each Australian State. Amazing experience; in terms of understanding how to make oneself happy and find purpose and direction in one’s life, it has truly given me renewed vigor and sense of purpose. Give it a go, you won’t look back. In fact do it with your partner, you both will get much from it.

Hi 400 days. Thank you for stopping by my blogging and liking my post. I read your about page and think your blog is a great idea. I’m also nearing 40 in a little less than 2 years and I have to say your perspective ( at least for me start to shift) it’s almost like you yearn to be wiser, happier, more perhaps even more soulful. Cheers on your quest!

    • 400daystil40

      March 21, 2012 at 07:47

Thank you so much, Nareen! Yes, you are correct, I am yearning for all the things you mention – the question is, will I actually find it???? I often think that quest for more is a quest that we should not let go of, no matter what age we are! 🙂

Thanks for dropping by my blog Kolpona cuisine. I had to come over and look at yours and what a fun idea. I read through a few of your recent posts and had to smile, then grin. I freaked out the year I was 29 because I knew the BIG 30 was coming. Forty has been pretty dang awesome. I can’t wait to get even older and hopefully wiser! Isn’t life a blast? May your journey be filled with amazing gifts from God each day!

Lots of interesting, insightful, thoughtful comments here – I just want to add (in case it helps at all) that at 45 I’ve never been more centered or satisfied in my life. Each passing year has been an improvement. I wouldn’t go back to 20 for anything. I think one is always searching/wondering/seeking (or should be anyway) – but with age comes…something close to contentment? wisdom? Lots of words could fit into that space. Best of luck 🙂 – enjoy the journey!

Thanks, An Unrefined Vegan!!! I agree with you, I also find that each year improves my life. I also would NEVER go back to 20!!!! 🙂 I do believe that with age comes some sort of refined wisdom and contentment with life. 🙂 Thank you again and I hope you stop by again soon! 🙂

Good timing. I just turned 39 a couple of days ago. My state of mind often ping-pongs between “what the F*&%??!!” and “life is good.” I think this is normal. Maybe.

    • 400daystil40

      March 21, 2012 at 22:32

Yes, birds fly – and if it is not normal, we can still pretend it is normal because at least two of us feel the same way!!!! 🙂 (Normal is relative anyhow, isn’t it???) 😉

Thanks for liking my Chipotle-Peach Salmon recipe, and good luck in your journey. Being older (perhaps not wiser) than you, I can offer the following insight into having a happy life:

    Take care of your health
Live in the moment and be thankful (corny but true)
Enjoy the small things (every time your children say “I love you”, for example)
Cook and eat lots of great food, enjoying the company of your friends and family

I will definitely be checking in with you from time to time to see how you are making out!

    March 22, 2012 at 02:44

Hi, thanks for visiting my blogs and liking my recipes. Your blog is fascinating! I’m way past 40, but I do remember a certain “restlessness” at the time…a kind of “is this all?” I’ll ever be. I found that no, I had many changes to go through (including getting a Ph.D. at 63!). But I also learned that the precious things at 40–the good spouse, the children, the intellectual work–became even more precious over time.

    • 400daystil40

      March 22, 2012 at 07:35

What wonderful insight, foodrefashionista! I am sure that over time the precious things do become even more precious to us, which is such a good reminder. Congratulations on getting your PhD at 40! That is a mountain that still intimidates me, but something I do hope to do one day! 🙂

I’ll be watching your blog with interest….It’s one great idea. I’m not sure if I would have been able to do that in my thirties as it was a difficult time for me …in fact my 40’s and 50’s were challenging also but if I had been able to and who knows?…if blogging had been part of my life then, it would now be good to see a lot of that time with reflection… Depression played a big part in my life. My 60’s have been very rewarding..and I enjoy writing about my life and others..and I really enjoy reading other people’s journey (Diane)

Thank you for your “like” 🙂 I’m pretty new to this. I’ll be 40 in about 3060 days so I have a little more time to figure “this” all out…but it won’t seem like it. Life fly’s by except for when it’s really sucking.
You must have a pretty strong character to not only challenge yourself, but to share the experience. I would bet you’re already further to your goal than you might think. 🙂

This is why I keep coming back here. You helping Mandi. And that Mandi got that the spelling/usage was wrong (sadly, so many do not have enough command of the language to even get it). And of course your recent liking of two of my recent posts. Whew, I am a little nervous about Poem 11, what with the huge popularity of The Hunger Games. But I write what I feel (like you), and I aint takin’ it back! Also, thanks for encouraging me to be persistent, hence the idea for Poem 10.

What a reflective journey this will undoubtedly be for you! I discovered a very rich life after 40 – with a few provisos, including: as long as one keeps both the left and right sides of her brain engaged; has friends and/or loved ones she can rely on (no matter whether they’re close by or long distance); has at least one creative art form through which to express herself; is able to laugh at herself; tries something new regularly; and realizes the freedom of life after 40 (not as much social pressure to conform as when we’re younger).

On my 40th birthday, I felt all grown up for the first time. The next day I was back to normal. However, the years since 40 have been much better than the ones before. And I keep growing.

Best wishes in your endeavor. It sounds as if you’re on the right path.

      March 24, 2012 at 00:05

This made me laugh as I can already picture that happening….. reaching this perceived milestone and the anticlimactic reality of engaging in my everyday life the next day. This reality is ironically both humbling and comforting. I have found, so far, that every year does seem to be better than the last and I would not trade the growth I have had so far in my life for anything – some of it has been very hard, but it helped mold who I am. Thank you for stopping by – please come again! 🙂

First, thank you for liking my post “leaving Portland.” Secondly, I am (cough, cough) years over 40 and I must admit not only do I admire you for attempting this goal of blogging for 400 days up to your 40th birthday, I am also a bit jealous that I didn’t at least journal for the 400 days prior to my 40th birthday. You have written so many things that cause me think “yep, been there, thought that!” and some things I haven’t even considered. My goal was to write everyday this year. I did well at first but then let life get in my way for several weeks. I am now trying to get back on track (and am trying not to beat myself up over it!) Hang in there and good luck. I’ll be reading!

    March 24, 2012 at 11:31

I am 40 in 341 days so we’re very similar in age!

I was dreading 30 a little bit, but by the time it came I welcomed the maturity it supposedly gave me – I was in a relationship, in a job that I loved and had a wonderful social life.

Now I’m nearing 40 it’s nice to know that despite my health concerning and sometimes failing me (mortality suddenly is REAL isn’t it!!) that I’m in a better place in lots of other ways. I live in a nicer house, I have retrained and now have a better job, I’ve found my life partner and I stand for no fools in my life (although I think I was just as stubborn at 30 truth be told!)

Thanks for stopping by my blog – it’s good to discover your words of wisdom…I promise to call by often.

Yes, Houdini, you are one of a few that are on this same trek at a very similar time – in fact, one blogger has the EXACT same birthday as me! I can relate with you, I am in a much better place in my life as I head to 40 than I was at age 30 (thankfully!) I thought I was in a good place at the time, but as I have learned and grown I look back and realize how lucky I am to be at this place in this moment of my life. Please do come by again!:)

Thanks for stopping by my blog! And yours….what an interesting journey to are embarking on. I am 63.5 and I have not yet arrived anywhere except to the conclusion that there are no arrivals on life’s journey, only pauses and that the most important moments are the insignificant ones. Enjoy your journey!

As one who is now 70, I have found my authenticity, I’ve connected with that which is greater than myself, I’ve followed my passion, I’m married to the most amazing man there is (at least for me), and yet I’m still hungering and thirsting for more truth, more intention, and more of it all.

I don’t know that we ever get to a sated place where we stop and think, “I’m done.” I trust your 400 day journey will be the beginning of the journey of a lifetime.

Thank you for your wonderful comment, Brenda. I want to be just like you when I am 70!!! I think if we are not thirsting for more, than we are probably not living….. at least not the type of life I want to be living. I wish you the best and hope you have many more years left on your journey. 🙂

Oh my goodness, how do you find the time? It was very nice of you to like my blog and support safety for our Nation’s children. You will be a lot wiser by 40, all that reading will make you look
Inside yourself and then be present in each moment of your journey……my husband turned 60 the year I turned 40…. We had a blowout 50s style dinner dance, band and all……100 years ofFun, what will your party look like?

      March 24, 2012 at 21:55

Thank you, Melinda, for your kind comment – and yes I do support safety very much (as a parent and someone in the education profession!) Wow, what a grand party you must have had with your husband – how fun! I have not really thought about what I will do on my 40th…. I am more of the type to like a small intimate gathering with family than a big bash…. so time will tell!!! 🙂

We had a big bash for only about twenty five, thirty people, including kids and their friends, we wanted something fun and different…….we now have a group of friends that we have themed dinner parties with once a month…sometimes more often……we are crazy fun!

When I turned 40, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and jumped into the next phase of my life. Which was to follow my intuition and sell most of my belongings, leave my cush job of 16 years and move across the country. Although it wasn’t exactly what I thought it might be, I have never regretted the decision I made. It has led me to where I now sit, ~ 600 days before my 60th birthday. Believe in yourself, trust the universe and understand that all the knowledge you have is within…..and what was the platform # for Hogwarts? Perhaps the starting off point is right in front of you! You’re just not seeing it. (though I’m not suggesting you run into any brick walls!) Best of luck in your journey. From reading your posts, I think you are well on your way. And thank you for visiting my blog.

Kudos to you for wanting to learn.

You are welcome, Liz, and thank you for the comment! 🙂 I am guessing fireworks will not go off at midnight on the day I turn 40, but maybe I will gain something along this journey to somehow make me feel more like the “grown up” I am supposed to be! 🙂

No fireworks? I got fireworks;-) (no I did not, but wouldn’t that be fun?) Don’t push too hard to be that “grown up” as I think the grown-up thing is overrated. Figure out who you want/need to be and have at it. Yeehaw!

A friend of mine once told me that “you will not find what you are looking for unless you searched for it.” Not all of us has the capacity to count and be mindful of the days before we reached “40,” what more, document it in your blog. Without knowing it, you had inspired a lot to accompany you in that journey and to look closer on their lives on what is possibly still be missing.

I really hope you find what you are looking for.

Wisdom by deadline? Not sure you can force it. Live enough and it just comes by reassembling the pieces of experience that stand out for being attractive, memorable, and mysterious. It’s the mysterious events in your life–those that allure you but you don’t understand–that will gradually turn into understanding if you live with them long enough.

I admire your courage in undertaking this blog. You can’t know anyone or anything until you first know yourself. It’s the heading that counts–into the mystery of yourself. I am with you, brother (or sister).

Thanks for checking out my blog. I invent myself before your eyes, as you will yourself before the rest of us.

      March 25, 2012 at 21:10

Ah yes, technically you are correct, perhaps I cannot find wisdom by an exact deadline, but hopefully embarking on this journey will at least provide some wisdom along the way!!!! 🙂 I look forward to visiting your blog again. Take care!

I turned 40 this year and it did feel different. It felt good, I felt happy and contented, and I now feel I can be the person I am without worrying about other people’s opinions of me. 20s were better than teens, 30s were better than 20s and now I’m thinking 40s could well be better than 30s. Hurrah for turning 40! I wish you well on your quest and hope you enjoy turning 40 as much as I did.

    What is your purpose?

That is a fine thing to find before you hit that 40th birthday.

What would you say you real purpose is?

What an interesting idea. I “got it” after 40 and it has been a roller coaster of epiphanies that turned my life upsidedown before righting itself. The answer for me? Let whatever happens be O.K., embrace the challenges with love and be grateful for all you have. I never felt like I was in charge anyway. Step back and become an observer of your life, it is an interesting perspective. Good luck with your journey. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Thanks for the recent “Like” on a blog post. Great concept for a blog. In terms of finding meaning in life I’ve always appreciated a quote by C.S. Lewis: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” Best wishes on your journey and on turning 40!

Well, I’m not counting days but I’m 1.5 years away from 50. Thing is I like myself better than when I was in my teens, 20s or 30s cos I receive more compliments on “You look good!” now than when I was younger! Yep, 40s is a good age to be in! 😉

Hmmm, I think I’m some 57 days behind you in the age department. I hadn’t given much thought to turning 40, figured I’d deal with 39 first. Now, my brain is working on all this crap around that milestone… with the I only have x number of days to get it worked out. I think I need to relax and let it all flow.
I do really like your blog. Following it now. Just not sure I need to get everything all figured out by that 40 year milestone. It’s all a journey and it’s all good.

Great blog idea. 40 was a hard one for me, but 45 feels more celebratory. I’m still feeling the call to get on with the things I want to do in this life, thinking that whatever habits I’m living now are likely to stay with me so they’d better be good ones. What do I have to share and how I am living my potential? Will my choices reflect a wish for security or an appetite for wholeness and a juicy life? I like how you’re using quotes to pose questions.
    ps thanks for the like.

What a brilliant concept for a blog. I’m loving it. On my 40th I was standing in the queue to enroll on my very first day at Uni!

I’d also managed to bring a smile to all my fellow commuters faces as I had completely forgotten that I still had on the ‘I am 40’ badge that my 27yr old sister had felt was essential to mark the occasion.

You’re right, we can’t take life for granted – my life path changed a few years ago and I am no longer as well favoured as I was. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I will follow yours with interest.

Wow! I am really inspired by your spirit. My gift at 40 was the birth of my one and only child. I waited 40 years for motherhood, so every experience and choice thus far has been in an effort to navigate my way through parenthood as best as I can! LOL. At first with my partner, but as our energy no longer vibrated harmoniously, it has been a solo adventure for a decade now (pats self on back)! I’m doing the best I can to embrace it all … the good, the bad and the ugly! Thanks for liking my blog A Home School Family … it was the door that connected me to your beautiful spirit. I’m still a newbie blogger so I’m a bit o a “green horn” in this dept. Nice blog. Thank you for sharing. I passed my 40th b day several months ago. Today I wrote a check and this 21 year old couldn’t believe I was 40 years old! He thought I was 20. Cool feeling.
You’ve achieved A LOT! Pat yourself on the back too. Kudos! Best to not over extend oneself is what I’ve learned from my life experiences. Everyone is different of course. I’m happy to say I’ve accomplished a lot but at what expense! If I had to re- live my life I would have stuck with something simple and not so ambitious. For me societal pressure was a factor because I felt I had to prove myself as woman that I was super capable in a man’s field. But initially I envisioned the world to be more gentle shall I say?
I don’t want to go into specifics, but my situation from an outsider’s point of view is no where as good today, but in my heart I feel better. And while I’ve had my “mid life crisis” I feel somehow I am being authentic with my self regardless of other people’s outwards perceptions.
I’ll stop rambling but your blog definitely gets the heart moving. Thanks for sharing!

The truth about life is that you will continue to strive to be better than you are and when you stop striving your life will end. Continue to learn, grow, laugh, and love. Simple advice and I am sure you are looking for more (I would hope so or you are no longer striving to be better), but it is always nice to share.

What a fabulous idea for a blog!! I will be turning 40 on March 31st, and I CAN’T WAIT!!! To me, the 40’s represent having a deeper understanding of who you are, of not being as afraid to express this knowledge, and of being wonderfully open to evolving into all you can become. It means taking less garbage from people, and paradoxically being more open to who people are. It means not only finding one’s own voice, but discovering one’s own LANGUAGE. The 40’s aren’t about restoration regarding past losses, but they are about discovering new treasures, even if those treasures are not immediately recognized for what they actually are. And the 40’s are about keeping our eyes open for surprises. They are also about seeing and nurturing sparks in others, so that we can all become more fully alive. 🙂

I think we all feel/felt this way. I went on holiday with a 21 year old when I was 40 (strictly friends) realised I wanted more for myself left my husband of 20 years and three almost grown children, when I came home, Four years later met a man online playing backgammon and we’ve been married 10 years. If life is easy it’s right for you if it’s a constant struggle then life’s too darned short to suffer. I hope you enjoy the 400 days to your birthday as much as I enjoyed the 1,856 and counting since mine’

Could the hole be the Creator’s sadness? Will prayer help? I know this is a comment most dislike hearing especially if you grew up like me…somewhat priveledged, a belief that everyone goes to heaven, and a feeling of betrayal from the misguided teachings of Western Christianity. Remember this is not about religion it is about the spirit and the unknown. This is about being accepted and accepting love. Good luck and the Almighty bless your journey for truth. Oh and get some excercise…haha

What an excellent idea for a blog. The idea of challenging people’s perception of you and what you are supposed to have achieved or be by certain milestones in your life, interests me alot. Not only this but the constant battle with the thought that somehow you’re doing it wrong. Will be following you!

I was so interested in reading your blog and in the comments. I couldn’t ready them all but I hope someone out of 300+ comments mentioned that our real purpose on this earth is simple–to glorify God in everything we do. We were created by God to have a relationship with him. That’s why every civilization has had some way they tried to reach God–it’s in the human soul. You will never be totally satisfied in this life until you know the God that created you in a personal way. This is made possible only by the death and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay our penalty for sin and rose from the dead to purchase a place in heaven for us. When you trust Jesus’ payment for your sin by faith in him you will experience the most exciting, fulfilling, joyful in all circumstances relationship with the Most High God. I talk to so many people who think that to get to heaven we must try hard and be the best person we can be. If that were true, why did Jesus have to die? Being right with God comes from trusting what Jesus did for you on the cross because we can’t be good enough. And being right with God is what brings purpose and meaning in life. BTW, this is not my opinion, this is what God’s Word tells us. That’s the only opinion we can trust. Blessings,

Thanks for your comment, Ladybelle. So many of us look around at the wonders of life and find that there must be a higher purpose – in fact, many people turn to God when asking the questions about what their destiny is, etc. Even with the different religious viewpoints of the readers (from aethiests to Christians to Muslims to Bahai) I find that everyone is searching for something to believe in (whether God or trying to find someone on earth). The sad thing is that I notive so many people who have connected religiously and still have not managed to find inner peace, and are still searching. In fact, some of the most tormented souls I have ever met have been within the church walls -and some of the most content without – all of this to say, I am not sure we can simplify and say that knowing God or a certain belief system in and of itself will bring satisfaction, as there can be many other factors that are involved (health, mental illness, etc.) I am so glad you commented beacuse it is so important for the readers to hear from many perspectives – someone may read your comment and find in it exactly what they need. Thank you again, I hope you return and read some of the posts!

Funny, this was a topic at dinner tonight…happiness. Authentic happiness. One thing I have to say, for sure; it isn’t what society tells you; the education, the marriage, the house and car, the children. (There are joys in these, if you consciously chose them, but when society choses them for you, they could be a hinderance in your quest for happiness)

I have been to poverty stricken areas, cambodia, parts of Africa, etc., and many of those people have a grace and peacefulness about them, and yes, happiness. They may not know where their next meal is coming from, but I saw more gentle, peaceful smiles in these people than I do in the typical rat race in the U.S. I am not saying that you can’t be happy here in the U.S. …I just think other peoples ideas of what should make us happy here in the U.S. is a misleading dream. “Stuff” can get in the way of authentic happiness.

If you can’t accept that you are going to age and wrinkle, how happy will you be when you lose your bloom and actually age and wrinkle? Base your happiness on your looks and see how fast that happiness fades. Back to the 3rd world, they don’t have the time or resources to worry about plastic surgery or wrinkles. Multiply those superficial concerns by 20 more superficial concerns: what neighborhood you live in, what kind of car do you drive, where are your children going to school, how can I cheat age and look 15 years younger, are the Jone’s outperforming you, etc. and you are adding unnecessary stress to your life. Stress that doesn’t contribute to your authentic, long-lasting happiness.

I know that it runs deeper than what I am saying here. But, sometimes you have to identify the outside pressures that we try to measure up to and decide if they even matter in life. Start there, and then move deeper after you toss aside what society imposes on us, and actually hinders us on the path to authenticity.

I like your blog, dreams, goals! Good Luck.

Among other things, I have mentioned third world countries (I think in one of last week’s posts) – it was a post titled, “Wants Versus NEEDS” – And I mentioned visiting two different third world countries when I adopted my daughters….. again, if you read through some of the posts, I think you will find they align with what you said!

Beautiful to be so interested in finding “what else” may be out there. 🙂
I’m guessing that there is no “arrived”: only learning, and making “course corrections” along the way. Finding the “Goal” is bigger than the standard career, house, car, 1.75 children (or whatever it is now). Learning to love the work at hand, because it leads to “something more” is joy for the journey. Shalom 🙂

Lots of luck with your quest when you reach 40. Having past that milestone almost 8 years ago (and my midlife almost 3 years ago), I had been lucky in that I learned a lot of this back during my epiphany when I was 25.

And as you have seen in my last entry (that you liked), I’m having to relearn it all over again. May your tenacity match your spirit in reaching this goal.

I’m of the opinion we will never arrive until we get there, and we won’t get there until we’ve completed our assigned tasks. Kind of like the old sayin, (very loose rendition) “The day you stop learning is the day you cease to exist.”
I also prescribe to the theory–actually, it may be my own theory–that everything I’ve seen, done, said, heard, and in general, experienced in this life up to this moment, has formed the person I am at this very moment, and though it obviously all matters, it is no longer of great importance. The most important thing now is what I will do next–and by that I mean what I will do this very day.
Oh, jeesh… there I go rambling and babbling to a perfect stranger. Sorry!
No, wait… this is kind of like letting my light shine, huh?
Love your blog! Going to folow along and see how the next 312 days go!

I think that is a great idea! I am approaching 41 myself, but somehow the process of turning 40 gets a person thinking about whether they are truly happy, how well do they really know themselves as a 40 something, what are your thoughts and views on everything and nothing. For some reason the process of turning 40 gets you thinking, especially the I am really am adult now type of thinking.

    I love this idea!

Thanks for liking my adoption update!

I also want to live the life I’ve been given to the fullest – whether its for 40 years, 80, or 29. Here’s something God has said regarding just this:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!”
For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night….
The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.
Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom….
Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days…
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”
    [From Psalm 90]

I believe that only he can give our lives true meaning! May you find that meaning in your life!

Lol you appear to have hit your middle age crisis somewhat early. I hit mine when I turned 34 and looked at what “life” was and decided that it could be a whole lot more. I guess it’s all about taking the “road less travelled” and making your own choices. Not taking the easy road and in being able to be honest with yourself. Listening to good music, really talking to your partner and family about what truly matters. It’s so easy to get caught up in racing along to the beat of societies drum. I can’t keep up with that beat anymore. I dropped out of the race at 34 and have been walking (supposedly a better form of exercise anyway ;)) ever since. I walk down all sorts of weird and wonderful metaphorical roads. I wander about all over the place in my mind and have taken up reading, surfing some crazy sites online etc. to give me my own personal sense of space in the world. Good on you for questioning where you are and where you are going. You can’t take control of your choices unless you do that. Being completely honest with yourself about everything is also an incredibly important milestone. Excellent idea for a blog by the way and hopefully you arrive at the end mentally more enlightened. If you don’t…you can always have a massive party for a week when you actually turn 40 and burn out all of those rogue brain cells that wanted you to do this in the first place! You just have to think laterally 😉 (can I come to that party?…)

I think I hit my first middle age crisis at age 12!!! 😉 I agree with you that it is indeed so easy to get caught up in the race as society propels us forward, instead of being able to look inside and take a step back and really analyze what we are doing and why. Yes, I am not sure what will happen when I actually do turn 40 – it will be interesting to see how I actually end up celebrating.

Thanks so much for your comment and stopping by – the key to establishing more followers is to take the time to read the blogs of others – if you read them, then they will come to read your blog. You too can build an audience! Anyone can! 😉

When I was in my thirties, I was told life begins at 40. It does. It’s when you quit caring what the rest of the world thinks. That is freedom!

      April 15, 2012 at 13:22

Ah, this is one of my top goals, learning to let go of what others think. In my job I am in a position where I manage others, so this has been a learning curve already in progress. It is hard sometimes to remember that our job is not always to be popular.

      • Fay Moore

        April 15, 2012 at 16:25

Yes, being “popular” with your underlings comes with some iffy side issues. It’s far better to be respected. The response of those you supervise, when they respect you, is professional and productivity oriented. When the boss is the “buddy”, the orientation is more fun and games. Been there, done that. The old dog learned new tricks. 🙂

Great idea (for a blog) – I’m guessing a few days have passed. I think I had some similar thoughts as I worked up to my 40th, too 😉 I noticed what you said “purpose”, too – and was happy to see that you have prioritised LEARNing – as good a purpose as any 😉

    Take care,

Life is a continuous journey. I have been evolving over decades, and getting truer to myself each year. I hope you don’t end your search after 400 days, since you will have many more to continue your journey. It’s great that you are starting and your efforts will reap rewards. Good luck!

I’m glad I decided to drop by and thank you for liking my post, as now I’ve found this amazing blog of yours! I was, and probably still am, a ‘life-planner’ and thus having uncertainties surround my life would sometimes cripple me with fear. I worry about the consequences my actions will have in the future. But, I thought staying put, in hope that nothing will go wrong, is just a waste of a life. Sure, bad things happen, but recently I’ve come to realise that good things happen too. As of now, I’m just trying to live life one step at a time, while reflecting, growing and collecting good memories.

I wish you well in your journey and I will keep coming back for more updates 🙂

First of all, I wanted to thank you for dropping by to visit GOLANSKI’S TREASURES and sending some “Like” my way! Your blog is great fun — love the creativity. Having (quite awhile back) celebrated my own 40th BD years ago, I can share some words of (hopefully) wisdom. First of all, I decided NOT to have a “midlife crisis,” opting instead for a “midlife EXPLOSION!” Second — one of my favorite quotes to mark the occasion when it arrives. “When a member of the San Francisco Mime Troop unaccustomedly broke her silence to answer a question regarding her feelings about having reached the age of 40, she said . . . ‘I don’t know whether I feel more like four 10-year olds, or ten 4-year olds!'” Blog on!

Through my website: http://www.nancypoling.com . Only last night did I get up the direct purchase through PayPal. I didn’t expect being an author to require becoming a techie. OUT OF THE PUMPKIN SHELL is cheaper, though, through Amazon. I have to add shipping and envelopes to my costs. I hope you enjoy it. It gets serious after starting out kind of wacky. It’s partly a story about transformation–along with women’s friendship and family secrets.

I found your blog because you “liked” one of my blog posts! I adore your blog and it is such a great platform for a blog! Your honesty and self deprecation is wonderful and your insights and obvious intelligence are refreshing!! —AND being 44 myself, your trepidation at the prospect of turning 40 is familiar and memorable for me. I just wanted to let you know — DON’T WORRY! I know it sounds over-used, but you will love it!……oddly enough! A dear friend of mine told me when I was 39, “Never underestimate the 40’s Mojo”. I laughed and she looked at me and said “I am serious”. She was/is right. You will find a freedom (I’m sure you already have an inkling of it) and appreciation for who you are and a complete disregard for peer pressure in general. Do not underestimate the power that is on it’s way, and be sure to “control” it when necessary (when it is in your/your kids best interests)!….I’m still working on that last part!

Great! I would recommend doing it with small kids, if I’m honest though. (you really won’t get a great amount of nutrients through the week), but you could invite them to share you experience with you by helping you measure out food, talk about it etc. it is $1.50 per person though 🙂

It’s too late for me…but I was sharing your site with my wife last night and find it so interesting that around that turning of decade #4 there seems a propensity to count and take account. Last year, turning 41 (daughter says “forty-fun”), I started designating my daily journal-writing by # of days of 41 (for instance today is “Day 220 of 41”)…just a curious thing. Appreciate your purpose – hope many more take it up, daily, at any age. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and intents.

Yes, it is interesting – I am finding many people who write and share similar experiences – it seems it really is an age for us to question and the questions hopefully will continue to challenge us to move forward in positive ways.

Thanks for Liking my blog Honey & Quinine. I believe that “authenticity” is not something you will achieve with insights you hope to obtain. It is something you are — or are not — with the insights you possess. I look forward to following your quest for the goal.

I found it so much harder to turn 50 than 40. I t hink because in my mind I convinced myself I wasn’t going to acknowledge that 40th birthday and no one else could either. Been to long ago to rmemember now. I can understand your feelings about it, but somewhere I’ve read, “Forty is the new twenty.” Hope this makes it easier for you. Thanks for reading my blog. You have a wonderful idea. I’m now 63 and just learning what it is I want to be when I grow up. I do know that life is wonderfully exciting. One thing I did learn is to tell those you love how much you love them everytime you get the chance because you’ll never know when you won’t see them again or they you.

We live in a world that tells us to be on time, to do this ,to own that… A few years before I turned 40 I could feel a stirring within my soul, like a part of me I had pushed away, hid deep inside was ready to live. I had done much for so many others or did what society said I need to do, I had lost me… I am now learning who I am, reconnecting with myself has been the greatest blessing one could have at the tender age of 40 😉

“The greatest adventure is not going to the moon, the greatest adventure is going to your own innermost core.”

    ~ Osho

    Blessing along the journey…

I admire this idea, Real time awareness and taking control of your life with a deadline of your 40th, a mid-life awareness in stead of mid life crisis!! Your happiness & growth as an individual is almost made more real as you concentrate on fulfilling your dreams and taking the leaf role instead of watching it all pass by. Pretty cool. I’m sure your 40th birthday will be an emotional one!

    • 400daystil40

      May 6, 2012 at 22:41

Yes, I am trying to have that mid-life awareness, though I think it seems to be holding hands with a potential crisis (trying to avert!!!) 🙂

You have been nominated for an award!

I have only been blogging since March, so my nomination came as a complete surprise. But I am pleased to be nominated. I started blogging to take up some of my free time and to hopefully kick start my dormant drive to write. I’ve been surprised by how much I enjoy it, and I hope my few readers enjoy it too.

I’ve made some connections here in the Blogosphere and I really enjoy the interactions of so many different types of people, from ghosts to yogurt eaters. Since blogging is very anonymous the honesty on these pages is sometimes staggering. People blog about the best and the worst and the mundane and mediocre, and each is different and each is a new joy. One of these connections is the person who nominated me for this beautiful and sentimental award. Her link is found here http://hometogo232.wordpress.com

I am very honored to have been considered. As requested, here are the rules/suggestions related to receiving this award:
•Share who gave it to you with a link back to their blog: http://hometogo232.wordpress.com

•Reveal seven random facts about yourself. (follows)
•Give this award to fifteen other bloggers. (I stopped at ten.)
•Pop the award on my blog. (I can send instructions.)

    Seven Things about me:

    1. I need a new hula hoop.

    2. I hate to shop. Groceries especially.

    3. I only hate inanimate objects and ideas.

    4. I like birdwatching.

    5. I am learning to be more tolerant, especially those whose ideas totally contradict my own.

    6. I avoid mirrors.

    7. I don’t know how apply make up.

Here are the blogs that I want to nominate for this award. They all have something special to offer those that take time to read their blogs.

Hi There! Thanks for liking my post(s). Yesterday and another one a few weeks back.
I hit 40 a couple of years ago. Nothing changed, still no wiser. One thing I intended to mention at my 40th party speech (but forgot. I write better than I speak) was that a certain bike shop in Melbourne Australia has a motto on their window: “Worship the Journey”. The destination of life is irrelevant, as is any arbitrary age we may see as a milestone. By all means, set goals, learn what you can, help where you can but above all else, enjoy. 🙂 You know the saying, life’s not about avoiding the thunderstorms. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

Good Luck and Happy 40th! 🙂

    – Richard

Thank you for visiting my blog!
I TOTALLY understand with what you stated in your purpose for your blog. I felt exactly like that when I was 25 – I’d graduated from a good college, had a (very) good job, a good apartment, new furniture, new car, a college-boyfriend-turned-husband- Everything I’d been raised to think would make me a ‘success’.
But I felt so, so empty inside. Life felt like a ‘life sentence’ – not a LIFE.
In my case I got lucky in an unexpected way — my husband and I suddenly separated and in the shock & aftermath I realized I needed to find more meaning to life and do something different in my life. For me (another unexpected turn) it turned out to be learning from a wise south korean teacher in a martial art in California (www.jsw.com). I’m 44 now and far happier than i was at 25. Wishing you all the best!

      June 5, 2012 at 07:50

Wow, it sounds like you have been through quite a journey! I think you bring up such an important point – sometimes something traumatic and unexpected happens and it can be horrible in the moment, but then you learn and grow from those situations in ways you never thought possible and you end up stronger as a result (and often happier).

Keep inspiring others and continue to write your thoughts, fears and treasures… I am certain that by 40 you will find a far greater meaning to life and find whatever you have been searching for! Personally, I think you have! You are merely expressing it! Love ya kiddo!

Having been 40 for a while, I’m glad to be here. I got serious about writing, moved back to California, saw my kids leave home (and come back). I’ve also encountered hummingbirds, which come back when the feeder is full. Sort of like kids. Mostly I like knowing myself but not being so old that I know too much, as in doctors, etc. May the next 190 days treat you kindly and thanks for stopping by my blog!

            August 30, 2012 at 02:19

days away from 500 – apparently in my haste I miscalculated. At least based on the date calculator I found online.

I was very impulsive – and took less than a week to decide to blog daily… I really did not think it through – it is a lot of work! That said, I am learning a lot 🙂

            August 30, 2012 at 02:15

ABSOLUTELY!!!! I wish I had even for my own personal journal recorded those days before 40. That would be a blast to look back on as this decade comes to a close.

            August 30, 2012 at 21:54

How tragic! i am afraid I would found that I merely spun my wheels and it was more of the same of the 30’s. I heard it said that somewhere that the 40’s are the new 20’s. Googling that it came up with alternative the 40’s are the new 30’s. Looking back, I would definitely say 20’s. On a more deeper individualistic level, I would say the 20’s.

          • 400daystil40

            August 31, 2012 at 21:36

hehehe – I am not sure what they will be for me, but as my early 30’s were particularly rough and my 20’s not so great either, I hope they are just new altogether because I would not want to go back and repeat.

  397. FS

    September 23, 2012 at 16:48

Your site, and the whole concept of it is just wonderful.

Mind if I riff….on…purpose, meaning, authenticity. 🙂 That which feeds our heart, mind, body and soul or spirit; that one thing, or two or three. The getting to the places we thought we wanted to see, to go, doing the things we said we always wanted to do, hearing all the while a little voice or having a sense of …”okay, done that and it’s all good. What’s next? Now what?” The voice of whatever it is inside (spirit?) that is sated in the moment, and only for the moment.

Isn’t it wonderful..? The exploration, going deeper…saying yes and saying no, and wandering the labyrinth of life? Or maybe the maze. We are a species that tries to make sense of things, even when there isn’t any sense to be had.

I have named it (for me) “terminal curiosity” and work to make peace with that way of being, to see it as something authentic in and of itself because after all, the story I tell myself is that’s what got us out of the trees, and onto Mars and everything in between, including some of the bad stuff. Just because that’s not what our social constructs and rules suggest otherwise: find your vocation, your calling… as if living life isn’t its own vocation, as if loving isn’t its own calling, as if experience isn’t its own purpose, as if working to be a good person isn’t valuable enough…as if exploring what our own personal truth can be has no meaning.

.. I look forward to the rest of your posts. 🙂

I am many days, months, and years past the age of 40. And now I am learning to LIVE with Stage IV cancer, fighting the feeling that I have “not yet arrived.” We simply make a covenant with ourselves that we will live in the knowledge that we do the best we can, one day at a time, true to what we learn to be our authentic self a long the way.

I am so sorry to hear that you are fighting stage iv cancer. Yes, you are correct – often these tough life circumstances bring everything into perspective quickly and harshly. I hope you have a loving support system around you while you get the care you need to fight off this disease. Blessings to you and thank you for stopping by.

great idea for a blog – i read through some of your posts and i think they’re really interesting. i am turning 25 this year and, don’t laugh, i feel like i’m going through a quarter-life crisis. it seems while you have certainty in your life and are looking for more, i have nothing but uncertainty which is so uncomfortable. i thought that by the time i turned 25 i would be stable and know where my life is going, and i’m not looking forward to hitting this milestone without either of those. i look forward to reading more of your posts – thanks for liking one of mine!

Thanks for the visit! I think all of us think we will hit a certain age and “arrive” and most of us find that we still feel young and unprepared when we actually get there.

God I hope you don’t have it all figured out by 40! The beauty of life is in the searching, it’s all about discovery, and that’s where we really live.

    Peace and enjoy the journey!

I see you’re getting near the big day. I turned 40 this year, and really, what is 40 anyway? I’m still who I am, still trying to figure out balance, still seeking meaning and for ways to give back to the world in such a way that will enhance both the world and myself. I suppose I’ll still be trying to do all these things at 50, 60, and 70+ too.

I commend you on your journey and on your willingness to reflect and search for deeper meaning. Just know you’re not alone (though from all the comments above, I suppose you’ve already figured that out!).

I have to say that I have done more now that I have surpassed 40, than when I was younger. That’s not to say my past hasn’t shaped me, but I am now in a relationship I love and a career that I’m made for…have fun and I look forward to reading your blogs 🙂

    hi there
thanks for stopping by….like your blog….I see your big day is now near…Do you reckon you are any wiser etc? i mean on your quest to figure it out …
Have to as some one nearing 400 days past 40, say that i don’t think i am any closer to figuring it out or being where i wanted to be or knowing what truly makes me happy….but its an adventure getting there sometimes:). This years mission is to clear out the shit / things that hold me back in my life (people, ideas, clothes etc) …THAT IS HARD, HARD, HARD…Will it give me wisdom? nah but i feel better..
am looking forward to your post on the big day!!

Hey there! I am not sure that I am any wiser, but I do have a clearer path of what I plan to pursue for the coming year and some clearer career directions than I did a year ago. Oh, and I eat healthier and exercise more! 🙂 I like your mission for this year!

Thanks for stopping by my site, and what a great journey to undertake. I hope each day is more fruitful than the last. Having passed 50 myself (well, just barely!), I don’t know that I understand the world any better, but some things that have helped me greatly along the way are 1) great kids, 2) glass is ALWAYS half full or more and 3) a wonderful message that keeps my compass pointed in the right direction every week with the incomparably awesome Elevation (Mega)church…don’t run screaming till you’ve streamed one of Steven Furtick’s messages, or read either of his books, Greater or Sun Stand Still and you’ll know what I’m talking about…hip, relevant, unexpected words to inspire.

Ahh, forty, I almost remember those days of youth. Still feel forty (or rather 20) though but the mirror dont agree. What happens to the blog when you pass the magic line? 3650 days to 50? Will follow the few days left to forty with great interest.

🙂 – Ah, the question they all ask – what happens to the blog…. I have kept this up for 380 days and am down to the last 20… then what??? I won’t dump it, but will probably take a break… my thought is to take a few weeks off and then post once a week….. we will see!

Great idea for a blog! I’ve got about 180 days till 40. I like your reflection on your life at this point–I can certainly identify. I’ve recently changed careers, and it’s not over yet. My kids are transitioning to middle and high school. And my wife is changing careers. Oh! I forgot to mentioned we moved states last summer. I’m not sure if it’s just me or it’s 40!

Thanks for stopping by. What a great idea for a blog. Your second paragraph especially resonated with me. It’s exactly how I felt when I turned 40. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but I have to say the other side of 40 is pretty good because I decided to make it that way. It’s seems to be a point in life to stop and reflect and make meaningful changes. I’ll be following along to see how it all turns out. Do you think you’ll keep writing after you turn 40?
